And often these are connected to important social issues. What&#8217;s different this time though is that many large multi-national companies have shown clear support for certain causes, particularly the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as climate change. While in the past companies would stick to a neutral tone, so as not to alienate any of their customers or clients, this year activism has featured quite prominently on branded social media content as well as company websites.<\/p>\n<h3>Designing a website with activism in mind<\/h3>\n<p>The exact definition of activism is:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Efforts to promote, impede, direct, or intervene in social, political, economic, or environmental reform with the desire to make changes in society toward a perceived greater good.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A company website can be a good place for activism as this can be used as a platform to promote important social and environmental causes, while still offering your products or services. But how can this be done tastefully and respectfully? Well, there are a number of things to bear in mind, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Your brand identity-<\/em> <\/strong>social causes that contrast completely with your brand identity will not fit with your website very well. In fact, this can come across as insincere or unnecessary. As a result, you should always look at why this issue is important, and how it pertains to your company branding on the whole.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Community and engagement-<\/em> <\/strong>one of the main aspects of activism is bringing people together to discuss and engage with the larger issues, and join together to push for reform. In general, a website is not the best place for hosting this community content, as the primary purpose of any website is to sell products and services, and provide relevant and detailed information. However, this type of community content can be hosted elsewhere, such as social media, with links and clear visibility from your website.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Your target audience-<\/em><\/strong> while you might want to stay true to your own beliefs, and support causes close to your heart, you will need to keep these completely separate from the company website, if it is not relevant to your target audience. Publicly supporting an important cause can be divisive, and before you alienate any potential clients or customers, you should make sure that any activist content is also supported by the majority of your target audience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>So, is there space for activism in web design?<\/h3>\n<p>Overall, this year has clearly shown that the lines between corporate businesses and social causes can certainly be blurred. Supporting social causes and adding this publicly within your website can be a great way to help build community and trust with your potential customers and clients, although it can also alienate others. For effective results, you could consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Making clear links to policies and practices-<\/em><\/strong> if you have updated hiring policies, or have recently committed to zero waste, be transparent with your potential customers and make these policies a feature of your footer.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Using imagery above the fold-<\/strong><\/em> if you want to shout about your new sustainability support, for example, why not create above the fold content that shows this off.
