What is an infographic?

An infographic is a piece of visual content that combines text and illustrations or images to portray important information in a simple and easy to understand way. This can be added as a visual resource to blog pieces or website articles, or it can be made available to download as a PDF, or alternatively this can be used as part of your email or social media marketing.

What are the important considerations for designing an effective infographic for your website?

To design an effective infographic there are a number of things you should consider. These include:

  • The amount of text –  text used on your infographic should be minimal with just short sentences that easily get to the point. The text based content does not need to describe the imagery or illustrations, but instead the imagery and illustrations need to add context to the text and make the message clear.
  • The colour scheme – an infographic that is designed to attract attention and interest needs to have the right colour scheme. For some companies this can involve using company branding colours to create an effective and well branded piece of visual content. However, you are not limited to company colours only, as long as you provide a clear logo. You need to make sure that they’re typography and text content contrast well with the background colour to ensure maximum legibility. And you will also need to make sure that any contrasting colours used are not too overwhelming or off-putting for some of your target audience.
  • The style of the illustration and imagery- you should stick to the same style of imagery or type of illustration throughout your infographic so that this has a clear and concise overall visual presentation. You do not want to be alternating or changing part way through, as this can make your content appear disjointed and unprofessional.
  • The typography style- it is essential that your typography can be easy to read even by people who are skimming and scanning the content. While more decorative typography can be used for the heading or title of the infographic, you should stick to a sans serif font for the rest of the text based content on this. This will ensure that the words are easier to read on all devices.
