Your business or company website needs to grab the attention of the users. And persuade them to dig a little deeper into your website. That’s why, for many companies, bold visuals positioned above the fold work really well. Because a picture can tell a thousand stories. And visual content has the advantage in terms of resonating with the audience, and building a connection. But the only way for your audience, and potential customers, to know what your website is about, is to use actual words. Sometimes there’s no other way. So when you need to spell out your message, what should you be thinking about? Well, here at Pumpkin Web Design Manchester, we are Manchester’s leading web design experts. And we know how important it is for your message to be received. And understood. That’s why we have produced this guide to landing page typography. To help you blend creativity, with practicality, and use typography to your own advantage.

Be yourself

When it comes to landing page typography, you need to be aware that anything and everything on the website is a reflection of your brand. And this includes the typography itself. That’s why different types of brands use very different typography across their print/digital media. For example, you have the LEGO brand, which uses bold, rounded letters with bright colours to show off their playful side. While banks such as Barclays have a more serious and professional typography. Just check out each logo for more evidence.

So what does this all mean? Well, it means that the typography on your website, needs to reflect your brand identity. Or your company personality. The font you use for your first heading, usually appears above the fold. And this is the principal piece of font that will represent your company. If you are a quirky company, choose a swirly font with a playful edge. If your brand is more serious, choose something plain and traditional to give a more sincere edge.

Size it right

Whichever landing page typography type you choose, you need to get the size just right. From the heading, to the paragraphs themselves, the font needs to be easy to read on all screen sizes. And you also need to think about your users, and how they will interact with your website. The chances are, they will more than likely be skimming through your written content, in search of a specific piece of information they need. If your headings and subheadings are too small, they can easily miss the element they need, and end up leaving your page. So what kind of sizes do you need? Well, the size order of the page should go from:

  1. <h1>- the first heading on your page should always be the largest. And this is also where you might consider using a unique font.
  2. <h2>- the second heading on your page will be the second largest, with <h3> through to <h6> becoming progressively smaller. Make sure your headings are all noticeable and obvious, as these provide visual clues for users to jump through your content.
  3. <p>- the font size for your paragraphs should be easy to read, without having to use the zoom function, or squint.
  4. captions- captions for images are usually the same size as the paragraph font, or just a little bit smaller
