Happy Halloween everyone! As it’s the day for spooks, shocks, and frights, we thought we’d share our biggest fear. An under-performing landing page. After all, when it comes to your web design, the most important page is arguably the landing page. And the amount of landing pages designed without any research is simply terrifying! Your landing page can literally scare the customers away, instead of welcoming them in. And this has a knock on effect on sales and sign ups. As well as the success of your company website altogether. What could be more frightening? Here at Pumpkin Web Design Manchester, we are Manchester’s leading web design experts. And we work with businesses and companies across Manchester and the North West, including Southport and Wigan, to deliver high quality, effective web design solutions. Especially landing pages. So, what are the landing page features you should be hiding from? Well, this is our guide to the top 4 “frightful” landing page mistakes.

4 “frightful” landing page mistakes

If landing pages were houses, they should be cosy, warm cottages, welcoming and warm. So why do so many companies go for the haunted house approach? Broken links, grainy imagery and indiscernible text is terrifying to potential customers. And this only serves to drive people away. The 4 biggest mistakes include:

  • alarming layout
  • unnerving design
  • chilling imagery
  • terrifying typography

Alarming layout

Your landing page is there to grab attention, and focus the user on the call to action button or option. But so many websites are instead filling the landing page with menus, boxes of content and images that simply detract attention away from the focus. As such, it no longer serves as a landing page, but is just another page of the website. This isn’t  scary for potential customers, but it is off-putting. And it does have a terrifying impact on your sales.

Unnerving design

Another mistake we are often seeing is that the landing page, above the fold content, will simply be a form. How can customers sign up to your business, before they even know what your business does? This makes no sense to us, and the waste of this valuable marketing space is rather unnerving. As a potential customer, it’s also a little scary.

Chilling imagery

Landing page imagery should be cheerful and bright. This is true. But it should also be original! Cheesy stock photos are frightening at the best of times. But a landing page where you are greeted by the forced smiles, or even the old handshake cliche, is going to set alarm bells ringing for most of your users. After all, using stock imagery is almost like hiding behind a mask. And we all know how creepy that can be.

Terrifying typography

Finally, the biggest and most common mistake we see with landing pages is text that is simply impossible to read. Nobody can benefit from typography that makes your website difficult to read. Your users least of all. So save the unique fonts simply for the title, and even then, double check they are legible on all devices, including small mobile screens. You’d be surprised how many of them are not.
