Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is crucial for your website to succeed online. This can help determine how your website is perceived by search engines, as well as improving the user experience, and helping to increase sales, sign ups and bookings. And good SEO involves ensuring the highest quality content on your web pages. One important factor in particular is using no duplicate content. But what are the SEO problems associated with duplicate content? And how can this damage your website and your brand?
What is duplicate content?
Duplicate content is content that is the same, or very similar, appearing on multiple pages of your website. This could include:
- Home pages or landing pages that are area specific
- Product or service pages
- Blogs and articles
What are the biggest SEO problems associated with duplicate content?
There are a number of specific SEO problems that can arise from the presence or use of duplicate content on your website. These problems include:
- SERP ranking issues
- Inbound links losing power
- Crawling and indexing
SERP ranking issues and duplicate content
If more than one of your pages has the exact same content, or almost exactly the same content, with different URL addresses for each piece, you have a duplicate content issue. And this can have a negative impact on the Search Engine Results Page (SERP). When crawling websites to rank and index, the algorithm is generally looking for the content to meet certain criteria. Originality is one of the most important factors. As a result, your web page, product or article might not appear at in the top ten of the SERP at all.
At the same time, when dealing with a search query, the algorithm will not be sure which of your web pages to link to, with more than one of the relevant results having the same, or very similar content. As a result, the algorithm will choose which version to show and this may not be the most recent or updated version. This presents a couple of issues for your SEO strategy including:
- No SERP visibility for the other pages that are considered duplicates
- Lower SERP ranking because of perceived reduction in quality, original content
- Potential decrease in conversions as potential customers or clients are directed from the SERP to the page selected by an algorithm, which may not be your intention
Duplicate content means inbound links lose power
If your website create informative articles and powerful, industry related pieces, other people and other companies may choose to link their content to yours. However, if there are multiple pages or articles with the same content, they will need to choose just one to link to. And so instead of three external companies linking to the same page on your website, you will have three links to separate pages. This dilutes the link power for what should have been a high performing piece of content.
Duplicate content can waste crawl budget
Another significant SEO problem associated with duplicate content is the impact this can have on how search engines crawl and index your website. Search engines use automated bots to crawl web pages and determine which pages should be indexed and ranked. However, these bots only allocate a limited amount of time and resources to each website. This is often referred to as the “crawl budget”.
If your website contains a large amount of duplicate or near-identical content, search engine bots may spend time crawling multiple versions of the same page. As a result, valuable crawl budget can be wasted analysing pages that offer little or no new value.
This can create a number of problems for your SEO strategy, including:
- Important pages taking longer to be discovered or indexed
- Updated content not being recognised quickly by search engines
- New products, services or blog posts being delayed in appearing in search results
Over time, this can slow down the overall SEO performance of your website, particularly if your site regularly publishes new content. Ensuring that each page offers unique, valuable information helps search engines prioritise your most important content and improves the efficiency of crawling and indexing.
